Jerolim

russellliney This thoroughly beatuiful song bears all of Owen's more recent hallmarks in composition and theme. Always true to his own unique style; never compromising on the directness of his message in the lyrics which Owen puts across so subtly and romantically. He is a master of the poetic prose song. I love this song also for the retrospective aspects of a unique time of liberation gone by, of claiming ones sexuality and bringing it into the light, only to be subsumed into the crowd. Brilliant!

lyrics

Buried in the commuter crush
People are bust
Adjusted to just existing
Missing the music of their lives
And I am
One unsung among them too
Not young not old
Just bought and sold
A lost soul soldiering on
Alongside these comrades
The revolution never comes

Oh what were we taught?
How did I get caught?

When once I trembled on Jerolim
My eyes on the sea through the trees
And my shorts around my ankles
Wasn’t I there?
Didn’t I swear there on Jerolim
I’d not become one of the sad silent suffering crowd?
But Jerolim
Look at me now

Pacing through pines the line
Of my desire tight
I crossed the threshold of my fear
Hearing the music of my life
And there along the shore they stood
My fellow men who understood
I took their hands in gay abandon
And we sang love songs
As we wandered back inland

Owning our bodies
Knowing we were free

Now all I have of Jerolim
Are memories in a body
Employed for a bad end
Who was it there
That dared on Jerolim
To not be just one of the sad silent suffering crowd?
What happened to him
Jerolim
